Smith-Corona Coronet XL PLUS draw string attachment tips at end.

Draw string re-attachment.

I typed up a rather crude but helpful to the novice one page document on how to re-attach your draw string.  I am going to assume this is a common issue since I have seen it a few times in posts and mine has become detached three times. This fixes the reason why the carriage does not return or is sluggish to return.  This is a DIY tip and I am not a professional.  If you are not handy or don't enjoy fixing things yourself, this might not be a good project for you.  On the other hand, it's not very hard.  PATIENCE!

  1. Congratulations on your repair! That is a nice looking typewriter.

I had the same problem with my Montana. I was using it over the week end and after one return no more feed. I discovered the draw band was off of the drum. I wonder if more tension would prevent a reoccurrence.

  2. Well, I guess it is still 2013. I think my first two attempts did not put enough tension on the draw band. There is really no way to know how many revolutions of "pre load" you should put in. The final time, I but an extra turn or two on the drum and it then behaved nicely. The pictured machine is now with my daughter at College. The world turned upside down. I might suggest she sell it vs. bring it home. You can only have so many machines. I think it was more the novelty. I think the records she took have had longer lasting interest than the typewriter.
